Eighth Grade Bites by Heather Brewer
Plot Summary: This story is about a 13 year-old vampire-by-birth named Vladimir Tod who is struggling with life after the deaths of his parents when he was only 10 years-old. He lives with his moms best friend, who he lovingly calls his aunt. He is constantly harassed by the school bullies and is constantly in company of his best friend Henry Mcmillan. He has a crush on a girl named Meredith Brookstone who is (in Vlad's words) very pretty. Vlad is trying to hide the fact that he is a vampire from the whole town of Bathory because he doesn't want the town to be scared or frightened of him. His aunt Nelly helps Vlad hide his vampirism by sneaking blood into his school lunch. When the school teacher goes missing, a new teacher is sent to replace him. Vlad is immediately suspicious of the new teacher and follows him home after school. It is later revealed that the teacher is actually Vlad's uncle. When a fellow vampire wants to kill Vlad, Otis (Vlad's uncle) helps him kill the vampire and in turn saving Vlad.
Theme: In my opinion there are two themes in this story, one being family and the other being hardships in life. Vlad misses his family because they were killed in a fire and is dealing with their loss. He feels that his parents death was his fault because he turned off their alarms to let them sleep in and in turn causing the parents to not wake up during the fire. He is also dealing with the hardships of school and having to hide his vampirism from the town every single waking second. The only three people who know that Vlad is a vampire are Nelly, Henry, and Otis. He also deals with the bullies Bill and Tom at school and his nervousness surrounding his love interest for Meredith.
Favorite Quote: My favorite quote from the story is "The world is full of monsters with friendly faces." because it is true. Some people will lie to you and tell you that they are your friends and then hurt your feelings with absolutely no remorse. I have had that happen to me and honestly it feels like someone just drove a stake through your heart (no pun intended). Another favorite quote of mine from the story is "Whoever decided that school should start so early in the morning and last all day long should be hunted down and forced to watch hours of educational television without the aid of caffeine." I like this quote because it is funny and adds a sense of humor into the story.
Recommendation: I really recommend this book because it is funny and at the same time action-packed. It is also packed with a wheelbarrow of life lessons that can help you in life and give you hope. This is a really funny story and can get you out the unnecessary boredom of school and homework (god I hate homework.). It is a really good book not only for kids but for adults too who are looking for good entertainment. I really loved this book and if you ever get to read it I'm sure you'll love it. Well goodbye and remember WWE forever!!!

The Lightning Thief
Plot Summary: Percy Jackson is a twelve-year-old boy, diagnosed with ADHD and dyslexia, who has been expelled from six schools, the latest being Yancy Academy. During a school field trip to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York city, his pre-algebra teacher, Mrs. Dodds, attacks Percy, revealing that she is one of the three Furies. Percy's mother Sally allows his stepfather Gabe Ugliano to mistreat them both because Gabe "takes care of them" financially. To get away from Gabe, Sally takes Percy on a trip to Long Island for a three day vacation.
In the
middle of the first night, Percy's closest friend and former classmate at Yancy
Academy, Grover Underwood, who is revealed to be a satyr , warns him that the "Kindly
Ones", The Furies, are trying to kill him. Sally drives them both to Camp
Half-Blood, a camp for demigods where they can train. On the way there, they
are attacked by a Minotaur, which grabs Percy's mother by her
throat. She dissolves into a golden shower of light, while Grover and Percy
narrowly escape and enter the camp. There, Percy passes out and is taken care
of for a few days by Camp Half-Blood.
Percy is
moved into the Hermes cabin, under the care of Luke Castellan, the cabin's
counselor. The Hermes cabin is established to be the place where all demigods
with unknown parentage are placed. Clarisse, a daughter of Ares, says newcomers at camp have to have
their heads dunked into a filthy toilet and tries to dunk Percy's head into a
toilet with her friends. However, the water responds to Percy and Clarisse, her
friends, and Annabeth are drenched instead. For revenge, during a game of
capture the flag, Clarisse and her siblings attack Percy. He steps into the
adjoining river and is healed by the waters while Poseidon's trident appears
above his head, revealing him to be the son of Poseidon. Unfortunately, it also means that
Poseidon has broken an oath that he, Hades and Zeus took after the Second World
War to refrain from having any more children with mortal women, as the children
can become too powerful and become a threat. Such an example is demonstrated
when Chiron mentions the story of Thalia Grace, an unfortunate daughter of
Zeus. Percy is granted a quest to find Zeus's Master Bolt which Chironi, one of Percy's tutors at the camp,
believes Hades has stolen. Zeus, however, believes Poseidon had Percy steal the
bolt.
Percy has
ten days before the summer solstice to find the bolt and is given magic flying
shoes by Luke before leaving on the quest with Annabeth and Grover. Percy
decides to travel west to reach the entrance to the underworld in Hollywood.
They encounter a lot of monsters during the trip but they still manage to
safely return the bolt to Zeus.
Theme: The theme of this story is friendship and that you
have to fight even in the worst situations and not give up hope. For example,
Percy's friend Grover is always by Percy's side even though he is really scared
at times. The same goes for Annabeth even though she doesn't really have a good
relationship with Percy she is still by his side helping him. Also Percy
was in a lot of pretty dangerous situations that in most cases put his life in
danger but in the end he got through it. To me these are two pretty awesome
themes that go absolutely perfect with this thrilling story.
Favorite Quote: My favorite quote in this perfectly-paced
story is "If you're a normal kid, reading this because you think it's
fiction, great. Read on. I envy you for being able to believe that none of this
ever happened." I like this quote because even though the story is fiction
this quote stresses the seriousness of the story and its characters. This
quote pulls you read the book of how the quote is written. It is filled with
suspense and a beautiful sense of despair. That's why I love this quote.
It makes me think and I love a good challenge.

Arsenic poisoning and its effects
Arsenic poisoning is a medical condition caused by elevated levels of the mineral arsenic.Symptoms of arsenic poisoning begin with headaches, confusion, severe diarrhea, and drowsiness. When the poisoning becomes acute, symptoms may include diarrhea, vomiting, blood in the urine, cramping muscles, hair loss, stomach pain, and more convulsions. The organs of the body that are usually affected by arsenic poisoning are the lungs, skin, kidneys, and liver. The final result of arsenic poisoning is coma to death. Chronic arsenic poisoning results from drinking contaminated well water over a long period of time.Humans are exposed to arsenic through air, drinking water, and food (meat, fish, and poultry); poultry is usually the largest source of food-based arsenic ingestion due to usage of certain antibiotics in chicken feed. Arsenic was also found in wine if arsenic pesticides are used in the vineyard. Arsenic is well absorbed by oral and inhalation routes, widely distributed and excreted in urine; most of a single, low-level dose is excreted within a few days after consuming any form of inorganic arsenic. Remains of arsenic in nails (which show as white spots and lines) and hair can be detected years after the exposure.

Arsenic the deadly poison
Arsenic is a chemical element with the symbol As, atomic number 33 and relative atomic mass 74.92. Arsenic occurs in many minerals, usually in conjunction with sulfur and metals, and also as a pure elemental crystal.Arsenic is a metalloid. It can exist in various allotropes, although only the grey form has important use in industry. The main use of metallic arsenic is for strengthening alloys of copper and especially lead (for example, in car batteries).Arsenic and its compounds, especially the trioxide, are used in the production of pesticides (treated wood products), herbicides, and insecticides.Arsenic is a notorious poison to multicellular life.
